Mandolin School

by Joe Carr

I recently came across Henlein's Mandolin School Part One. The cover shows the copyright renewed in 1919 and an original price of $1.00. An Internet search only revealed that Charles Henlein also produced guitar instruction materials as early as the 1880s. Henlein wrote all the exercises and music for the tutor in several styles including waltz. caprice, lullaby, mazurka, polka, serenade, gallop and march. The songs are written for one, two and three mandolins accompanied by guitar or piano.
Song Without Words is a short mandolin duet. Henlein's original music features tremolo markings that my modern music-writing program cannot duplicate (or this modern operator can't figure out how to duplicate!) Mandolin One (the lead) is generally tremoloed throughout while Mandolin Two is not.
